The techniques that were used most often here are underlining and a small cross. The colors are a combination of blue with red and black. Of the geometric shapes, the most common were crosses, rhombuses, circles, zigzags, and especially rosettes. These figures had a deep symbolic meaning, and the shirt decorated with them was supposed to protect the owner from negative influences.
Floral and plant ornaments are no less popular in the Zhytomyr region: the oldest are periwinkle and birch, then hops, grapes, roses, apples, leaves, which were also found on other items of folk art (for example, Easter eggs).
